Curriculum Overview
DBIS Primary School is committed to ensuring that our students embark on their learning journey in a safe and nurturing environment. We provide stimulating learning experiences to allow students to pursue their strengths and interests, thus developing their curiosity, independence, confidence, and resilience when meeting new challenges.
Whilst our curriculum is guided and directed by the English National Curriculum, it also reflects our unique international setting and celebrates diversity. Each student is valued as an individual, and we work hard to nurture their strengths and interests. Our DBIS Learner Profile highlights the skills and attributes that are developed as our students learn through the school’s unique Learning to Learn and Learning for Life programmes.
Academic outcomes are essential, and as is the case in our EYFS school, we have continued high expectations of our students in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Specialist teachers in Music, Mandarin Chinese, Physical Education and Learning Technologies augment the breadth of the school’s provision.
For foundation subjects such as the Humanities and Science, we follow our Discovery Curriculum. Discovery Learning is a comprehensive, concept-driven, creative curriculum with a transparent learning process and specific goals for every subject.
We truly value the cultural diversity of DBIS students, and Discovery Learning offers the opportunity to celebrate, understand and reflect upon the importance of internationalism. This approach helps children to connect their learning to where they live and to learn from the perspectives of people from other countries.
We tailor our curriculum to meet the needs of our children in DBIS's specific international context. This method incorporates the rich cultural and religious diversity of Hong Kong. Throughout our school calendar, we celebrate a range of festivals that are important and prevalent in our community school and setting.
DBIS’s unique location allows the school to take advantage of the outdoor learning opportunities that Discovery Bay has to offer. Our Experiential Learning programme is embedded throughout the Primary School with regular in-class activities and themed weeks such as Pirate Week, which provide engaging opportunities for learning.
Due to the distinct nature of living in Hong Kong, DBIS students are extremely aware of their global footprint. Environmental awareness is interwoven into the ethos of the school, with students continually searching for opportunities to make their community a more sustainable environment.
