What's Been Happening in Year 1
It has been another busy couple of weeks in Year 1 and over the last few weeks we have really enjoyed taking part in our Busy Bees programme. We participate in Busy Bees every Friday and work with the same teacher for a six week block.
Some of us have met Dennis the Dragon in the school forest with Mrs Ko! We’ve made totem sticks, built a home for Dennis and have loved spending time in the outdoors with different friends. With Mrs Hoskin we have been participating in team building and parachute games. Last week we really enjoyed directing our blindfolded partner and playing the Circus and Crocodile games with the parachute. Mrs Broderick has been teaching us how to sketch Hong Kong transport in the style of Andy Warhol. We have also been practising our fine motor skills with Mrs Cook in Funky Fingers. We have loved grooving to the different beats each week in ‘Disco Doh’! To develop our fine motor skills we have been exploring activities such as threading, beading, using chopsticks to collect cotton balls and making crazy faces using small pegs.
We can’t wait to try our next Busy Bee rotation!
In Enquiry, we have been looking at the animals and plants we coexist with. We designed a habitat for an animal and this week we have begun to create the habitat using junk modelling. Mrs T showed us how to create trees, boulders, seaweed and rivers and we can’t wait to add them to our habitat. We are very excited to show you our finished habitats.
In Maths, we continued our work on 2D and 3D shapes and began to think about their properties. We went on a shape hunt around school, built 3D objects from resources and some of us answered problems using the language faces, vertices and edges. We would love to practise spotting 2D and 3D shapes around Discovery Bay with you!
Over the last couple of weeks, we have all visited the Leap Van. We were really excited to meet Harold the giraffe and find out how to be a ‘Healthy Hero’. We talked about how to keep our bodies healthy, where lots of the organs in our body can be found and how to make friends. We can’t wait to see Harold again next year and learn something new.
This week we have been looking at the picture book ‘Chalk’ by Bill Thomson. In the story the children draw a dinosaur which comes to life. We all thought of something we could draw and created stories to show what would happen if it came to life. We can’t wait to tell you all about our finished stories.
