A week in the life of DBIS
October 26th 2017
This week children across the school have used the concept of internationalism to celebrate their self-identity and to connect outwards with the broader Hong Kong community.
Encouraging children to feel proud of who they and where they have come from is an essential first step in the process of engaging and connecting positively with others. With this in mind, thank you to everyone involved in the various celebratory events across the school, in particular, the parents and staff who contributed to last week’s Diwali celebrations and those who attended Dr. Eeqbal Hassim’s workshops.
Congratulations this week to the Primary children involved in the DBIS football tournament held at Kings Park, Kowloon. The school’s five teams (2 girls and 3 boys) acquitted themselves incredibly well and were excellent ambassadors for the school. We are now looking forward to the Under 15 FOBISIA Games in Phuket where I know the DBIS team will represent the school with pride and determination. I am delighted to make you aware that we have received final approval from the Education Department regarding our new Senior School at DB North. As a result, our new Senior School campus will open for Year 12 lessons from Wednesday, November 1. I am very pleased with the quality of the learning space (15 classrooms and work areas), and I’m sure it will be an excellent site for the 100 or so Year 12/13 students who will occupy it over the course of the next few years.
I am also very pleased that our Secondary School will be hosting an Open Evening for all parents of children from Years 4 –12 on November 1. I would encourage as many parents and children to attend as possible as the event will offer a fantastic glimpse into the Secondary School at DBIS. Some demonstration lessons in curriculum areas such as Technology, Science, Creative Arts, Humanities and Physical Education will feature as part of the event. There will also be an opportunity to chat to our Secondary School staff and meet our student leaders. We would be grateful if you could register your attendance using the following link.
I also wanted to recognize the efforts of our Early Years team this week. Each time I visit the DBIS Early Years campus I am reminded of the importance of enquiry-based learning, the use of outdoor environments to enhance learning and of course learning through play. All of these approaches to teaching and learning offer children the chance to be in control, and to feel successful, within meaningful and open-ended experiences. I’m incredibly proud that our Early Years has successfully embedded these approaches and is increasingly regarded as a beacon school for early years education within Hong Kong and the broader regional network of international schools.
Best wishes for the weekend ahead.
