What's Been Happening in Year 4

Primary Year 4

Wow, another action-packed week of learning in Year 4!

Roald Dahl Day was so much fun, with students enjoying a range of Roald Dahl inspired activities. The children put lots of effort into dressing up and they all looked fantastic! I’m sure you will have seen a few of the Year 4 teaching team enjoying walking around as Golden Tickets too.

Our Enquiry topic is Shaping Up, and the opening provocations have really sparked the students’ interest. They have been thinking about how different systems in our bodies work and how the choices we make affect our health. The students loved researching the Skeletal System this week and thinking about what functions the skeletal system performs. Ask your children what the skeletal system does, I’m sure they’ll have lots to tell you! The children have also enjoyed labeling the different bones and finding out how muscles and joints allow our bodies to move.

The Shaping Up topic is also driving our literacy learning. During reading sessions, the children have been focusing on comprehending texts about parts of the body, how the different organs work and how to keep them healthy. In writing we are learning the structures and features of explanation texts, and practising using cause and effect conjunctions.

In Maths, the students have been thinking about negative numbers and the contexts that we might use them. They have also been rounding numbers to the nearest tens, hundreds, thousands and beyond. If you would like to support your child with this at home, money is a great way to demonstrate rounding in real life. For example, how much to the nearest dollar do you need to get a snack from the shop?
