The introduction of Year 12 and Year 13 at DBIS
Re: The introduction of Year 12 and Year 13 at DBIS.
As you are aware, the School has petitioned the Hong Kong Government over the last eighteen months for additional land to be made available in Discovery Bay for the construction of a third permanent DBIS campus. The School’s case has been based on our need for additional space to meet rapidly increasing student numbers, building regulation restricting the development of the School’s existing campuses and of course, the desire to complete our Secondary section with the addition of Year 12 and Year 13.
To this end, the School remains in ongoing communication with the Hong Kong Government with a view to securing a site for the construction of a third permanent campus in Discovery Bay. That said, the timeline for the Government to respond to the School’s proposal is clearly beyond our control, could take some years and may not be resolved in our favour.
As a consequence, and in tandem with our discussions with Government, the School has investigated the possibility of addressing the need for extra space by leasing facilities in Discovery Bay.
As an outcome of this lengthy process, I am very pleased to announce that we have secured additional space for the establishment of a Senior School (Year 12 and Year 13) at DBIS from August 2017 onwards. The Senior School will offer a broad two-year AS/A Level programme and a core DBIS component that will include an extended project qualification. Students in the new Year 12 and Year 13 will access all the School’s existing learning facilities including our new Library at our main Secondary campus in addition to the bespoke and newly designed Senior School Centre at the North Plaza of Discovery Bay.
The addition of Year 12 and Year 13 represents a significant chapter in the history of the School as it allows DBIS students to begin their education in the Early Years and complete their learning journey in Secondary. I am very grateful to members of the School Council and in particular Mr. Abraham Chung, Mr. Julian Wyatt, Mr. Peter Nixon and Mr. Peter Kang for their support of this project and ongoing commitment to the success of the School.
The School is currently in the process of contacting parents of Year 11 individually to discuss the Senior School’s details. Additionally, we will be hosting a parent information evening on Monday, March 13 at 6.30pm in the Globe for all interested members of the School community. Further presentations to parents of students not currently enrolled at DBIS are planned from mid-March onwards. A Senior School Prospectus can be accessed from the School’s website or requested from the School’s Admissions Manager, Mrs. Alison Wyatt. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me, Mr. Mike Waller, Head of Secondary, or Mrs. Wyatt if you have any questions.
