FOBISIA Music Teacher Conference 2015
DBIS Music team warmly welcomed 48 music teachers from different FOBISIA schools to the annual FOBISIA Music Teacher Conference 2015.
The goal was to accumulate and hone ideas that can be easily incorporated to improve or enhance music curriculums within our FOBISIA schools. The music teachers were inspired and enthused through a wide variety of workshops and discussions.
The conference began with an opening performance by a selected group of Gifted and Talented DBIS students who prepared a Chinese drumming performance with the assistance of Canice Gleeson (Head of Performing Arts at GSIS). Following the performance the teachers also participated in a Chinese drumming workshop.
Over the 3 days the teachers attended a variety of workshops such as African drumming circles, ukulele ensembles, musical theatre, curriculum discussions, cross-curricular projects in schools and many more. One of the guest presenters was Amelia Chan (Concert Master of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong) who led interactive conducting workshops as a whole group and smaller focused workshops directed at honing individual music teachers conducting techniques.
Max Clissold and Paul Barker also presented their collection of Nuvo Windstars Instruments. Compact, easier to manage and durable flutes, clarinets and recorders. DBIS hopes to introduce these instruments into music lessons in year 4. http://www.nuvo-instrumental.com
The teachers enjoyed a selection of musical performance by the DBIS students from music and movement to rock bands and African drumming to marimbas. The performances were well received and provided the teachers with a glimpse into what it means to be in a music lesson at DBIS.
Our students rose to the occassion with the music teachers displaying gratitude for how well mannered and welcoming our students and school is. Many described us as a 'warm, and caring community, which had a positive vibe'. A lot of hard work and effort went into the preparations from our maintenance team, events, ICT and music department. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all students, teachers and staff for supporting the events and enabling us to schowcase our wonderful school.
