The learning of a foreign language in primary school provides valuable educational, social and cultural experiences for all our students.
Students develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between Mandarin and English. Learning another language raises awareness of the multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an international dimension to student learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and that of others.
We aim for our students to gain confidence and competence in speaking Mandarin. As they learn they will have opportunities to consolidate the knowledge, skills and concepts they are developing in other areas of the primary curriculum.
Mandarin lessons are interactive and engaging with students developing skills in the key elements of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Our teachers are supported by our Education Assistants allowing for even greater differentiation and the possibility to challenge and extend our most able learners as well as support those with specific learning needs.
Our Year 6 students have the opportunity to extend their learning even further during their residential trip to China where they participate in activities such as shopping at the local markets and attending a local school for the day.
