Literacy is best taught through exciting, challenging and well-organised lessons where all the students are motivated to achieve their full potential.
At DBIS we deliver this whilst ensuring the students develop the key skills of reading, writing and speaking and listening. Our stimulating learning environments and high quality resources are effective tools in engaging students so they are able to express their ideas within a range of contexts, catering for a variety of learning styles.
Effective teaching of literacy at Primary School is so fundamental to students academic, social and emotional development. Our literacy provision is therefore underpinned by robust programmes that are considered best practice in the UK and worldwide. The synthetic phonics programme we use from Reception through to Year 4 is Read Write Inc (RWI). In addition to this we deliver the Big Reading and Big Writing programmes developed by Ros Wilson.
Our curriculum is continually adapting to suit the learning needs and interests of our students. Teachers use a range of assessment strategies to monitor and target all students so that every student is able to achieve their full potential.
Providing constructive feedback and encouraging our students to be reflective in their learning journey is an essential element of effective teaching. Through systematic target setting the students assess their own and peer’s reading and writing capabilities. Modelled through the teacher's own formative marking, students are well trained in giving appropriate feedback and reflective learning is a characteristic of literacy lessons at DBIS. Watching the children learn from each other in this way is a extremely positive experience.
Beyond the classroom we ensure that every student has opportunities to visit the theatre and hear poets and storytellers first hand. Each year authors and poets will visit the school as part of our World Book Day Celebrations. Classes and year groups take a number of literacy focused trips that further inspire and develop their literacy skills.
